Due to the growing awareness by agencies and organizations involved with disaster preparedness and response of the importance of appropriate mental health intervention for disaster affected populations, the Psychological First Aid Field Operations Guide for Nursing Homes was created for nursing home staff to use with residents. It addressed the gap that nursing home residents do not usually stay in public shelters where responders and relief workers provide Psychological First Aid, but are evacuated to other facilities where they can recieve needed skilled nursing care. The 2nd Edition reflects a multidisciplinary approach to care and broadens the scope of how, when and where the intervention should be applied. The core components of the guide have been expanded to encompass personal emergencies and individual life events and trained nursing home staff are encouraged to use Psychological First Aid to assist people who are in need of this support, regardless of the magnitude or nature of the cause.
The Hospital Preparedness Program is supported through eight Healthcare Coalitions. These coalitions work with local partners within each region to prepare hospitals, emergency medical services, and supporting healthcare organizations to deliver coordinated and effective care to victims of terrorism and other public health/healthcare emergencies. Each region maintains one full-time regional coordinator and one part-time medical director.
District 1 Regional Medical Response Coalition (D1RMRC) can provide planning, education, and exercise resources to assist healthcare organizations with emergency preparedness. We coordinate with hospitals, public health, emergency medical services, long term care, dialysis and community partners to maximize medical surge capacity and capability for an emergency or disaster. A variety of information can be found at our website.
We would like to provide you or colleagues a time to share with the healthcare coalition your understanding of the CMS emergency preparedness requirements and challenges identified by association members. The Operations workgroup meets the first Tuesday of every month, here at our District 1 office from 12:45-1:30 p.m. Teleconferencing is available if you are unable to attend these meetings in person.
Emergency management coordinators have responsibilities that include planning for hazard, risk identification, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery in local jurisdictions. Because of the nature of the services home health care organizations provide, it is important that local emergency managers be made aware of each home care organization services and needs.

The system also provides situational awareness about important but non-emergency health-related information. Account registration is easy and quick.
Medicare beneficiaries rely upon electricity-dependent medical and assistive equipment, such as ventilators and wheel chairs, and cardiac devices in our communities. Severe weather and disasters that cause power outages can be life threatening for these individuals. The empower map provides the beneficiaries within communities.
